Learning Pali and Buddhism

The teaching method used at Tharmanaykyaw Monastery is "Nikāya Examination." In this method, students have to prepare and sit for exams one Nikāya by one Nikāya (according to volume), all the Five Nikayas. They can do exam for one volume or all the volumes in one particular Nikāya. After they finish one Nikāya, they can go to another Nikāya. When they finish all Nikāyas, they are awarded Tipiṭakadhara. But if one can finish one nikaya also, one gets degree such as "Aṅguttaravidu" for finishing Aṅguttara Nikāya.

Tharmanaykyaw Sayadaw has written several Pāḷi books based upon those Nikāyas that help students learn the Pāḷi language easily. Sayadaw emphasizes learning Pāḷi through reading the Pāḷi texts rather than through learning grammar books.
